Thief surrenders after drinking tea with kind hostages

A burglary suspect surrendered to police, ending a one-hour standoff in which he took a family of three hostage, Apple Daily reported Thursday.

The 22-year-old man, surnamed Chui, broke into several units in a residential building in Sham Shui Po early Wednesday morning, police said.

Responding to a report of a theft, officers arrived on the scene.

Chui tried to escape by climbing down external scaffolding from the 12th floor to the fifth floor, severely injuring his back.

He broke open a window grille on the fifth floor and took a family of three in the flat hostage, the report said.

The family didn’t panic but calmly dealt with this man who was threatening their lives.

Asking him to keep cool and taking care of his wounds, they offered him a cigarette.

Chui helped himself to seven packets of lemon tea from the refrigerator and took a shower.

After about an hour, he realized that he might not be able to get away and decided to kill himself with a knife taken from the family’s kitchen.

The family talked him out of it.

He then surrendered to police after phoning his younger brother and sister and asking them to study hard.

Police suspect Chui may have taken drugs before committing his crimes, as he was in a hyperactive state when he was arrested.

Most of the objects stolen, including a mobile phone and a handbag, were recovered.
