Video catches shopping tour guide meltdown over poor takings

If you join a shopping tour, you’d better buy enough stuff to make your guide happy.

Or your luggage could end up on the ground and you might even be left behind by your bus.

A group of tourists found that out and a tour guide is in hot water after being videotaped ranting and hurling luggage in frustration at her small takings.

The video surfaced on social media, prompting criticism from an industry body, Apple Daily reported Friday.

The woman, nicknamed Ah-ying, was angry that her tour group did not do enough shopping which reduced her commissions from the shops.

Ah-ying’s clients were shocked as she offloaded their belongings while angrily complaining about their “insufficient” purchases.

She then asked the driver to start the bus and leave the tourists behind, the report said.

Michael Wu, chairman of the Travel Industry Council of Hong Kong, criticized the woman for inappropriate, impolite and unprofessional behavior.

The council has yet to hear from her but Wu said the matter will be investigated and disciplinary action will be taken if necessary.

The group of 23 tourists was on a shopping tour to Hong Kong which included visits to designated shops.

Such tour groups are charged a minimal fee by tour guides in anticipation of high sales commissions from an expected shopping spree.

The tour guides have no basic salary and rely on commissions, the report said, citing industry sources.
