Hong Kong police have arrested one of six suspects involved in the kidnapping of Bossini heiress Queenie Rosita Law.
A man was arrested as he was trying to cross the border at Lo Wu, Hong Kong’s new police commissioner Stephen Lo Wai-chung said at his inaugural press conference on Monday.
The man, a 29-year-old named Zheng Xingwang, is believed to be part of the gang which fled with huge ransom money after kidnapping the granddaughter of Bossini fashion chain founder Law Ting-pong.
Queenie Law was released unharmed last Tuesday after kidnappers secured a HK$28 million (US$3.61 million) ransom payment from her family.
The police nabbed one of the suspects as he was trying to cross the border into mainland China in the early hours of Monday this week, according to Lo.
Zheng did not resist arrest. He did not have any of the ransom money with him when he was detained.
He has been moved to the police’s Kowloon East Regional Headquarters as officials conduct further investigation.
The police, meanwhile, are looking for the other culprits.
Officials are in close touch with mainland authorities to resolve the case, said Lo, who has replaced Andy Tsang Wai-hung as Hong Kong’s police chief.
The search for the other suspects had been extended to the mainland, Apple Daily cited Lo as saying in the news conference Monday.
According to latest reports, the Shenzhen police have arrested two people who may have links with Zheng.
The persons, said to bear the surnames Wang and Xung, were nabbed at a hotel in Shenzhen early Monday.
The police believe that Zheng tried to leave Hong Kong and go to the hotel where Wang and Xung were holed up.
Authorities are investigating if Wang and Xung are involved in the Hong Kong kidnapping.
A gang of six broke into a mansion in Clear Water Bay on the night of April 25 and fled with 29-year-old Queenie Law, the granddaughter of late tycoon Law Ting-pong who created the Bossini brand in 1987. She was later released unharmed on April 28 after the ransom was paid.
After her release, the victim held a press conference last Thursday. Law said she is fine in body as well as spirit, but asked for time and space to restore herself following the kidnapping incident.
