Chinese netizens have lashed out at a man who was seen brutally attacking a toddler in a video clip uploaded online, Apple Daily reported Friday, citing mainland media.
But the wrath of many of the internet users was directed at passersby who saw the incident but failed to intervene.
The video, which was shot Monday night in the city of Yan’an in Shaanxi province, shows a man kicking a child to the ground before repeatedly stamping on him.
The assailant then picked up a broom and used it to beat the toddler.
Police arrested the attacker, whom they named as Wang Jiaolong, 29.
The victim, surnamed Li, was a two-year-old boy who had been playing with a dustpan and broom on the pavement outside a shop when Wang approached him.
The video shows that in the early stages of the assault, one person rode past on a motorbike but ignored what was going on.
Seconds later, another person walked past in the opposite direction but again did nothing.
Bystanders did not stop the attack until it had lasted more than half a minute.
Police said hospital records and Wang’s family confirmed he suffered from schizophrenia.
In the past, he had attacked a woman and broken her knee.
The boy, who suffered a fractured skull and severe bruising, is reportedly in stable condition at a hospital.
Some netizens cursed the attacker, but others said the people who passed by but didn’t help the boy were even worse.
