HK man charged in Sydney with importing 150 kg of ‘ice’

A Hong Kong man has been charged with importing 150 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine worth A$100 million (US$80.5 million) into Sydney.

The 66-year-old man was arrested in Epping, northwest Sydney, on Thursday after the drugs, also known as ice, were found hidden in cardboard barrels marked as “chemicals”, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Customs officers first discovered the drugs when they searched a sea freight shipment late last month.

Plastic bags containing white crystalline substance were found inside six barrels, and laboratory tests showed that the substance was methamphetamine, the report said.

The drugs were later handed over to the Australian Federal Police, who said it was the biggest drug seizure in the country this year.

The arrested man has been charged with importing and attempting to possess a commercial quantity of illegal drugs, which carries a maximum penalty of imprisonment for life or a A$1.2 million fine or both, ABC said.
