An antique car owned by Hong Kong singer George Lam had a close brush with a falling tree in the early hours of Sunday, Ming Pao Daily reported.
A 15-meter tall and one-meter wide flame tree came crashing at about 1 am yesterday at Blue Pool Road, Happy Valley, damaging the wall of a parking lot nearby.
Among the vehicles parked in the property was a 1973-make Beetle car belonging to Lam, the report said. The car was said to be only a meter way from the spot where the tree landed.
Lam, through an assistant, expressed shock at the incident but said he was glad that no one was injured.
Professor Jim Chi-yung of the University of Hong Kong, said multiple factors, including fungus infection, could have made the tree vulnerable to heavy wind or rain, causing it to topple over.
It was not the only tree that fell on Sunday. As storm-like weather hit Kowloon Tong at about 3 pm, a 10-meter tree collapsed on Peony Road.
In that incident, the tree is said to have caused slight damage to a Mercedes-Benz vehicle.
