Two thieves who try to make a call on the iPhones they stole will be out of luck.
The phones they looted from a store in North Point were useless samples, Ming Pao Daily reported Thursday.
Police said a security guard at Princess Mansion saw two men wandering outside a mobile-phone store in the basement in the early hours of Wednesday.
When they broke its display window, the security guard shouted at them to stop.
The duo quickly reached into the window and fled with an iPhone 6 and an iPhone 6 Plus.
When police arrived, they found no trace of the thieves other than a bolas (a throwing weapon), an umbrella and the big hole in the window.
Surveillance video showed it took the pair only seven seconds to commit the crime.
The store owner said the two iPhones were only samples worth about HK$100 (US$12.89).
He called the duo “dumb thieves”.
There were real iPhones sitting next to the samples but the thieves were too stupid to identify them, the owner said.
He said he will install a surveillance camera to keep thieves away from his store, which has only been open for business for three months.
