Internet singing sensation Lung Siu-kwan was caught on the wrong foot Wednesday as she was accused of failing to pay for some purchases at a supermarket in Hong Kong.
Lung is said to have walked out of an AEON store in Taikoo Shing without paying for some vegetables and fresh food that she put in her shopping cart along with a few other items.
She was taken to a police station Wednesday evening to face a shoplifting charge, before being bailed out at around midnight.
Her manager later told reporters that Lung forgot to pay for some vegetables after she put them into a bag.
Lung had been sick on Tuesday but insisted on attending a three-hour boxing training session Wednesday morning, according to the manager.
When she went to the supermarket later, Lung was very tired and not feeling well, which may have led to her forgetfulness, the manager said, according to Headline Daily.
Lung is said to have paid for some items she picked up at a cooked food deli counter in the store, but forgot to pay for fresh food worth HK$120.
According to some reports, Lung said she was not aware that she had passed a cashier’s counter due to special design of the corridors in the AEON supermarket on Kornhill Road.
Whatever the truth may be, Lung has now become a hot topic in online forums.
The singer, whose real name is Choi Siu-yan, had worked as a teacher after graduating from the Hong Kong Institute of Education.
She was fond of singing but always wore masks during performances as she didn’t want to be recognized by fellow teachers and students. She became popular as she performed at Mong Kok venues during the weekends in 2012.
Video clips of her masked performances were widely circulated over the internet, helping Lung gain many fans and a lot of media attention.
In June 2013, she unmasked herself during a performance at a Mong Kok street and received great applause from the public due to her pretty looks.
However, she lost some fans subsequently as she joined an educational center to become a “Tutor Queen”. Some people suspected that her move to unmask herself was a publicity stunt for the educational center.
But her profile again rose after she signed a contract with recording company and resumed her singing activities.
Lung has belted out many songs to cheer pro-democracy protesters, for events such as the July 1 March and the Occupy Movement last year.
