Toyota communications chief held on suspected drug violation

A Toyota Motor Corp. executive has been arrested on drug offenses for allegedly sending a painkiller through the mail.

American Julie Hamp, the carmaker’s head of communications and its first female top executive, was arrested after the painkiller Oxycodone was mailed from the United States to Tokyo’s Narita Airport, according to Reuters which cites the Tokyo police.

Toyota is standing by Hamp who denied importing the illegal drug. A spokesman said the company is cooperating with investigators.

Oxycodone is a prescription drug in the United States but is a controlled substance in Japan where only authorized parties are allowed to import it.
