Man given 12-month probation for locking son inside car trunk

A man who locked his seven-year-old son inside the trunk of the family car for three minutes as a punishment for allegedly being disobedient was given a 12-month probation at the Kwun Tong Magistrates’ Court on Monday, RTHK reported.

Li Kin-keung, the father, said he was infuriated after his son did not return for 15 minutes while the family was having dinner in a restaurant in March this year.

He later found his son hiding behind the car. Out of anger, he locked the boy inside the car trunk and drove home.

An off-duty fireman witnessed the incident, marked the car’s plate number and called the police.

Dr. Chui Wing Hung, a specialist in cardiothoracic surgery, said a person could suffocate inside the car trunk.

Li said he regretted what he had done and was ready to take back his son from the care of the Social Welfare Department.

Magistrate So Man-lung told Li to follow the instructions given by the probation officer.
