Teenager severely injured in random attack by schizophrenic

A 19-year–old woman was severely injured and may be disfigured after she was attacked by a man who was mentally ill, Sing Tao Daily reported Thursday.

The attack, which appeared to be random, happened Wednesday night on Siu Lek Yuen Road in Sha Tin.

The teenager, a saleswoman surnamed Au, was on her way home on foot after work when a man came out from nowhere and slashed her back, neck and face using a pair of scissors.

As Au was struggling and crying for help, six men who passed by came to her rescue and subdued the man.

Police arrived and arrested him.

Au was rushed to the Prince of Wales Hospital.

She said she had never met her attacker.

The 26-year-old man, surnamed Tsang, who reportedly suffers from schizophrenia, lives close to the scene and was discharged from hospital three weeks ago.

Police in Sha Tin district are following up on the case.

The attacker will undergo medical examinations.
