Secondary one textbooks can cost up to HK$4,700

Parents may have to spend up to HK$4,700 (US$606) for secondary one textbooks this year.

Apple Daily compared prices from 44 secondary schools and found that TWGH Mrs. Wu York Yu Memorial College has the priciest list at HK$4,700.

Lam Tai Fai College has the cheapest at HK$2,123.

Parents are also having trouble getting all the books on the list.

A woman, surnamed Chan, whose daughter will go to a direct subsidy school come September, said she managed to buy only 60 percent of the textbooks required for the new school year after visiting five book stores in the space of two days.

Hon Wing Book Co. Ltd. director Shek Hon-kei said secondary one textbooks are usually on sale by the end of June.

However, publishers waited this year to better gauge their print runs to save storage costs, hence many textbooks are still under production.

Shek said all books should be ready by early August.

Industry sources said publishers normally sell to bookstores with a 17 percent wholesale discount while most book sellers typically offer customers 5 percent off the cover price.
