The parents of a nine-month-old baby boy said an elderly woman tried to abduct their child while they were shopping in Sheung Shui earlier this week, Sing Tao Daily reported on Thursday.
The father narrated the harrowing incident on his social media account to warn other parents in the area to be always on the alert when going out with their children.
On Tuesday afternoon, the baby’s mother, surnamed Wu, took her baby out on a stroller with her husband and mother.
Wu stopped by a dispensary to do some shopping, while her husband, surnamed Lai, and mother waited outside with the baby.
A woman in her 60s approached the stroller and praised the baby for being cute. She then bent over as if she wanted to take the baby out of the stroller.
Lai stopped her from touching the baby, but the woman grabbed the handle of the stroller as if she wanted to push it away.
Wu, who was by then walking out of the store, shoved the woman, who was forced to flee.
A CCTV camera at the store failed to capture the face of the woman.
Lai said he felt it was strange that the woman asked him if the baby could speak since people should know that babies don’t speak.
He suspected the woman asked the question because it would be easier for her to kidnap the baby and pretend that she knew him if he could not speak.
He said the incident brought him chills whenever he thought of it.
