A 42-year-old Indonesian domestic helper died in an apparent suicide at Lee Kee Building in Ngau Tau Kok on Sunday morning, Apple Daily reported.
The maid, identified as Doyati, was found by neighbors hanging from a fire hose tied around her neck at a staircase of the building. Responding firemen removed her body.
Police said initial investigation showed that Doyati had financial troubles.
Last year, a total of 1,007 suicides were reported in Hong Kong, down by 33 cases from 2013, according to the coroner’s report.
Of the cases, 477 deaths resulted from jumping from high structures, while 230 were due to hanging. A total of 615 were men while the remaining 392 were women.
The Samaritan Befrienders Hong Kong, a local voluntary organization, offers counseling services to people suffering from depression with their hotline 2389 2222.
