A 33-year-old man involved in contractual teaching jobs committed suicide on Friday after being out of work for two years, Apple Daily reported.
Chan Lik-tan, who holds Master’s degrees from three local universities, was found dead at his apartment in Tseung Kwan O Plaza on July 17, the paper said.
He is believed to have killed himself by inhaling helium gas.
Chan’s mother was quoted as saying that she found her son sitting on a chair with his head covered with a plastic bag.
Chan began taking contractual teaching positions after graduating from the University of Hong Kong in 2009. According to the report, he had to shift to at least four schools in four years.
He couldn’t get a permanent teaching post despite studying hard and securing Master’s degrees from the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
Chan was said to be good at mathematics, information technology and physics.
Since 2013, after finishing a job at the Tsuen Wan Government Secondary School, Chan had been unemployed.
According to his father, Chan had been unhappy as he was not able to get a secure job. He was also apparently suffering from low self-esteem as he had to accept financial help from his family while he was unemployed.
