Music live-stage-cum-eatery folds under 30% rent hike

Backstage Live Restaurant, a trendy eatery in Central, is closing after eight years, a victim of surging rent.

The Wellington Street restaurant has featured live performances by musicians, comedians and DJs.

Its owners, including lyricist Vicky Fung and singer Pong Nan, are trying to raise HK$50,000 (US$6,451) in crowdfunding for a series of farewell concerts and to cover the rent next month, according to a Facebook post cited by Apple Daily.

The performances will be held between Aug. 5 and 30 and will headline 30 artists, it said.

About HK$8,000 has been raised but the restaurant will be forced to close earlier if the required sum is not raised by Aug 7.

Famous lyricist Chow Yiu-fai lamented that a cosmopolitan city like Hong Kong cannot sustain a music venue.

Backstage has been renting the 2,000 square-foot venue for HK$120,000 a month but the landlord has increased the rent 30 percent to HK$160,000 for the next lease.
