Anti-occupy egg thrower given 120 hours of community service

A 44-year-old man, who owns a newspaper store, was sentenced to 120 hours of community service for tossing an egg at pan-democrat lawmaker Leung Kwok-hung, also known as “Long Hair”, RTHK reported.

Yiu Yau-pik was convicted of common assault at the Eastern Magistrates’ Courts on Monday for attacking Leung in front of the Legislative Council complex in Admiralty on Oct. 30, 2014.

He said he will not appeal.

Yiu admitted that he had done something wrong but declined to apologize. He said it should be Leung who should apologize for dividing society by urging people to join the Occupy protests.

He said revenue fell at his newspaper store, along Lockhart Road in Wan Chai, during the Occupy protests. He said he had closed the store.

Magistrate Lee Siu-ho said Yiu deserved a jail term for his premeditated attack. He said Yiu should not use violence against the people who hold different political views.

However, as Yiu has no criminal record since 10 years ago, he was given 120 hours of community service instead, Lee said.
