Robbery suspect hung out to dry by flaming fashion sense

If you’re up to no good, you can’t stick out like a sore thumb — or wear loud pants.

That was obviously farthest from the mind of a teen robbery suspect who struck in a pair of distinctive flame trousers.

Police caught up with him a month later, his identity given away by his unusual fashion sense.

It turns out the unemployed 18-year-old man, surnamed Lam, wore the same pants to three successive store robberies in Fanling in July.

He did make an effort to disguise himself by wearing a face mask, according to Apple Daily.

The ruse unraveled when someone washed the pants and left them out on the terrace to dry.

Police spotted them and made a successful match to a video clip of the suspect’s clothing from a CCTV camera.

Lam stole HK$7,000 (US$902) from the three stores and spent it all in China during a visit to his girlfriend, police said.

He was arrested at the Lo Wu border checkpoint Monday night while returning to Hong Kong.

The offending pants, along with other personal items, were seized from his home as part of a police investigation.
