SmarTone launches mobile payment service

SmarTone Telecommunications Holdings Ltd. (00315.HK) has launched a point-to-point sales and marketing platform for mobile payment services.

The service is available on iPhone and Android apps linked to a UnionPay card.

It will be initially introduced in Hong Kong and Macau and will be launched in mainland China as part of a second-phase expansion.

Users don’t need to change their SIM cards to use the platform unlike that of HKT Trust and HKT Ltd. (06823.HK).

SmarTone uses ultrasound technology that does not require any other interface.

Vendors can rent SmarTone terminals for several hundred dollars a month, lower than a credit card or Octopus card machine.

Also, they are required to offer up to 15 percent discount to encourage purchases, some vendors said.

Outgoing chief executive Douglas Li said the platform allows retailers to promote their products and target the right customers.

Li is leaving the company at the end of the summer.
