Russia may curb state procurement of foreign condoms

Reports that the Russian government might ban condom imports have turned out to be misleading, according to Bloomberg News.

An import ban mooted by Russia’s Industry and Trade Ministry would apply only to condoms and other medical devices purchased by state agencies, and not to those sold to consumers by retailers, the report said.

A spokesman for President Vladimir Putin was quoted as saying that he wasn’t aware of any proposal for an outright ban on condom imports.

The news will come as a relief to consumers in a country where nearly all condoms sold are foreign-made, and local products are deemed to be unreliable, the report noted.

“We don’t recommend using” Russian brands, the owner of a Moscow condom boutique was quoted as saying in a media report. “We sell them as balloons.”
