Mother charged with murder after abused baby dies

A mother who lives on Cheung Chau was charged Wednesday with murdering her baby after the two-month-old died in hospital, Apple Daily reported Thursday.

The unconscious infant was sent to hospital Tuesday afternoon.

Police launched an investigation after a coroner suspected the baby died from being strongly shaken, as he was found to have bleeding inside the skull.

The mother, surnamed Leung, 30, and her sister, 31, told police the baby fell into a coma during a nap, but investigation revealed the mother had slapped the baby multiple times and had thrown him off the bed.

The woman was reportedly upset that her husband had abandoned the family, and she took her anger out on the baby.

Her sister was granted bail after being charged with misleading the police.

The mother appeared in Eastern Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, RTHK reported.

However, no plea was taken, and the case was adjourned to Oct. 22. She was remanded in custody.

The prosecution said there was no eyewitness and the woman was the only guardian of the baby.
