Retiree’s life savings gone after burglars steal safe from flat

Burglars ransacked three flats in the same building in succession and stole a safe containing HK$800,000 (US$103,220).

The residential building in To Kwa Wan district had been without security guards for several days, pending a new contractor, Headline Daily reports.

The suspects might have known about the situation when they struck on Saturday.

A female resident, surnamed Chan, 38, called the police after finding her window bars had been broken.

She reported no losses.

But a 65-year-old occupant, surnamed Fung, told police a small safe was missing from his flat.

It contained HK$800,000 cash and gold accessories, he said.

A woman, surnamed Chu, said she lost a tablet computer worth HK$2,000.

Fung, a retiree who bought his flat five years ago, said he was shocked to find his home in a mess, with the windows in the living room smashed open.

He said he kept all his savings and valuables in the safe because he does not trust banks.

Fung said he was devastated by the loss of almost everything he had.
