A 26-year-old man in a BMW saloon car gave chase to a hit-and-run suspect in a Mercedes-Benz, resulting in the arrest of the latter’s driver.
Police arrested a 35-year-old-man, surnamed Ip, after the high-speed chase through the Aberdeen Tunnel to Wah Lam Path in Pok Fu Lam, according to Ming Pao Daily.
It began in Queen’s Road East in Wan Chai at 2 a.m. on Wednesday when the Mercedes-Benz grazed the BMW in a minor collision and its driver sped away after a brief altercation.
The BMW driver, surnamed Kwok, took off after the Mercedes in a five-kilometer chase worthy of an action movie, witnesses said.
The police arrived after receiving a report from Kwok.
Ip refused to give a sample for a blood alcohol test and claimed he was not well.
He was held briefly by the police before being sent to hospital.
Ip was granted bail and told to report to the police in early October.
Ringo Lee, chairman of the Institute of the Motor Industry Hong Kong, said drivers who engage in a chase could face speeding and dangerous driving charges.
The best way to resolve a traffic accident or dispute is for the drivers to exchange information and leave everything else to the authorities, he said.
