A video clip showing a man who appears to be a foreigner refusing to pay the fare after boarding a bus in Sham Tseng went viral on Facebook, Ming Pao Daily reported Friday.
When the bus driver asks him to pay, the passenger shouts “No, no, no!” and keeps insisting in accented English, “I pay many, many money.”
Another passenger offers to pay the fare for the man, who is becoming increasingly emotional, but the gesture is rejected.
What happens next on the three-minute clip, posted Thursday, surprised many viewers.
Although the man appears to be of African origin, he suddenly breaks into Cantonese, calling the bus driver “troublesome” and a “numbskull”.
The driver warns the passenger he will call the police, then phones staff at the bus company to inform them of the situation.
The video doesn’t show the outcome of the standoff.
Some netizens said the average foreigner would not be able to speak idiomatic Cantonese, so they suspected the passenger might be a torture claimant who has lived in Hong Kong for a lengthy period.
Other netizens commented that all passengers must tender bus fares, regardless of their identity, and praised the driver for dealing with the situation calmly.
