Man kills mother after being scolded for coming home late

A 39-year-old man with a history of mental illness stabbed his mother to death on Monday after she scolded him for coming home late.

The suspect, surnamed Sze, and his 67-year-old mother, surnamed Yu, lived together at the Sha Kok Estate, a public housing project in Sha Tin, and were on government welfare, Headline reported on Tuesday.

Sze had blood stains on his tattooed right arm when police arrested him.

He suffered from psychosis 10 years ago, and had been confined in the hospital for treatment. However, he was released to live with his mother five years ago.

Investigation showed that Yu scolded her son around 3 a.m. Monday for returning home late. Sze then became emotional and picked up a pair of scissors from the kitchen and stabbed his mother to death.

Psychiatrist Dr. Ivan Mak Wing-chit said family members should pay attention when living with persons suffering from mental illness, and avoid criticizing or provoking them.
