Melco Crown opens US$3.2 bln Studio City casino-resort

Melco Crown Entertainment is opening its new Studio City casino-resort in Macau on Tuesday, hoping the Hollywood-themed facility will bring in huge crowds and boost the firm’s revenues.

The resort, built at a cost of US$3.2 billion in the Cotai area, will be Melco Crown’s third casino-related facility in the Chinese special administrative region.

Pop diva Mariah Carey will headline a star-studded opening ceremony, which will also be attended by Hollywood stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro and acclaimed director Martin Scorsese.

Studio City represents a break from the other 37 casinos operating in Macau. It has no VIP baccarat lounges and will focus instead on mass-market casual gamblers, Reuters reported.

Melco received permission to operate 250 gaming tables, more than the 150 tables predicted by analysts but less than the 400 tables Melco had requested from the government, the report said.

Studio City is the second resort to open in Macau this year after Galaxy Entertainment Group opened its Broadway casino and resort extension in May.

Since opening in May, Galaxy has grown its market share among the six Macau operators, according to the report.
