Five illegal immigrants wanted to sneak into Hong Kong from Shenzhen by boat, but they didn’t get very far, Ming Pao Daily reported Monday.
The five, believed to be Southeast Asians, boarded a boat operated by a smuggler at 3 a.m. Thursday in Shenzhen.
Soon after it departed, the vessel was chased by Hong Kong marine police.
The smuggler made some detours to try to shake off his pursuers.
Instead of heading to Hong Kong, he took his passengers back to Shenzhen.
The smuggler hurried the foreigners ashore at Xiaomeisha, a beach in Shenzhen, saying they had been delivered to Hong Kong as promised, then fled.
“In spite of all our efforts, we are back to Square 1,” one of the five illegal immigrants said to the Shenzhen police who arrested them.
Shenzhen has been a popular staging point for illegal immigrants bound for Hong Kong.
Early last month, Shenzhen border police busted an organized crime group and arrested 26 Southeast Asians for attempted illegal immigration.
