Policeman gets 16-month jail term for molesting female suspect

A police constable was on Friday sentenced to 16 months in jail for molesting a woman under the pretext of a body search.

Kong Ho-wan (鄺浩雲), 26, was given the jail term by the Eastern Magistrates’ Court after he was convicted earlier this month on charges of “indecent assault and misconduct in public office”, RTHK reported.

Kong was accused of misbehavingwith a woman inside a toilet at the Wan Chai police headquarters in January this year.

The woman, who was from mainland China, had been taken in for questioning in connection with a shoplifting investigation.

Under the pretext of searching her, Kong touched the woman inappropriately, including her breasts, and also asked her to remove her underpants so that he could have a peek at her private parts.

Handing out the jail term, Magistrate Lee Siu-ho said Kong had abused his power and betrayed the public’s trust in law enforcement.

The magistrate also said that he doesn’t think that Kong was genuinely remorseful for his actions.

Hence, a plea by the policeman’s lawyer that his client be given rehabilitation and counseling, instead of a jail term, was rejected.
