What it takes to become a million-yuan mistress-buster

A Chinese woman dragging her husband’s mistress around by the hair, a furious Chinese wife beating up a shameful mistress on the street, angry wives hiring goons to attack mistresses — these are common images on mainland news outlets.

With no lack of young women willing to become professional mistresses in return for a lavish lifestyle or for money they can send back to their impoverished families in rural hometowns, hundreds of thousands of mainland wives are confronted with the threat of “the other woman”.

An estimated 80 percent of failed marriages in the mainland involve such affairs.

To help wives ward off this army of mistresses, here come the mistress busters!

Calling themselves marriage counselors, they undertake to get rid of the third party and save the marriage.

Customers are typically wealthy married women.

To qualify to become a mistress buster requires half a year of training, which costs about 300,000 yuan (US$46,900).

But the reward, an annual income of 1 million yuan, makes it worthwhile.

These counselors typically charge 200,000-500,000 yuan for each successful case.

Numerous lawyers and psychiatrists have quit their jobs to work for these lucrative marriage counseling firms.

The methods the counselors use vary from case to case.

Some negotiate a deal with the mistress, paying her a large sum never to be seen by her lover again.

Others use a range of tricks to get the mistress to fall in love with another guy.
