Truck driver arrested after fatal hit-and-run on taxi

A truck driver was arrested over the weekend for his involvement in a hit-and-run accident that resulted in the death of a taxi driver.

According to Apple Daily, a 56-year-old taxi driver surnamed Wu was heading toward Sheung Shui in the early hours of Saturday when he was fatally knocked down by a truck at about 2 am.

The accident took place on the San Tin Highway as the man stopped his taxi by the roadside after the vehicle developed some mechanical problem.

As Wu stepped out and sought to remove tools from the trunk to carry out repairs, he was hit from behind by a truck.

The impact was so severe that the taxi was pushed forward by several meters and heavily damaged, RTHK reported.

The driver of the truck, a 41-year-old man surnamed Leung, is believed to have got down from his vehicle and checked on Wu.

Realizing that he had caused grievous injury to the taxi driver, Leung decided to flee from the scene and continue his trip to the mainland.

The police arrived at the accident scene and immediately sent Wu to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:43 am.

With the help of CCTV footage and the cooperation of the Immigration Department, the police tracked down the truck driver and arrested him at Man Kam To Control Point at about 11 am.

He has been slapped with several charges, including dangerous driving causing death and failing to stop and report to police after an accident.
