Another playgroup closes, leaving parents and staff in limbo

Another playgroup operator, My Gym World, suddenly closed shop a few days ago, a little more than a week after Bambini Republic closed all of its five outlets in Hong Kong.

The latest closure has affected more than 10 parents, who said they have lost between HK$200 and HK$2,800 in tuition, Apple Daily reported on Thursday.

My Gym World, located at the Sha Tin Grand Central Plaza, has been closed for the past two days.

A notice posted outside the pre-school learning center reads: “We are not able to break even though we have worked hard to operate this playground since the beginning. Our tutors went on a strike on December 1 and they refused to negotiate with the center in charge about the resumption of work.”

The operator apologized to its customers, but didn’t mention anything about refund.

My Gym World operated for about a year, charging enrolees around HK$200 for each lesson. It had promoted the playgroup on Facebook and distributed leaflets offering discounted fees.

Some parents said they lost communication with the playgroup operator early this month after they had paid the fees.

One of the parents, surnamed Lau, said he paid HK$1,380 for six lessons, but the playgroup shut down before his son could join the class.

Lau suspected the whole operation was a scam and reported the case to the police.

My Gym World also hasn’t paid its rent since June this year. The shopping center has filed the case in court to demand the payment of rents, which amount to HK$60,000 a month.

The Labour Department is also looking into the case after it was learned that the operator owes its employees an unspecified amount of backwages.
