Theft suspect who targeted elderly flat-dwellers arrested

Police arrested a 41-year-old man suspected of several thefts in public housing estates in Wong Tai Sin, Headline Daily reported Thursday.

They said five reports of theft were received from residents of four different estates in the district in October and last month.

Police said the man’s modus operandi was similar in each case.

He seemed to target flats where only elderly people lived.

All the victims said a man pretended his clothes had been blown by the wind to their balconies and asked to be allowed to come in and retrieve them.

It was only after he left that the victims discovered some of their property was missing.

An investigation by police led them to suspect that a man surnamed Lui was the thief.

They arrested him Wednesday in a flat at Lung Kong Road in Kowloon City.

However, police did not find in his flat the property the victims claimed to have lost, including handbags, mobile phones and cash worth about HK$6,000 in total.
