More than half of Hongkongers will live in NT in 10 years

Hong Kong’s population is expected to hit 7.76 million in 10 years, more than half of which will be in the New Territories.

That means the New Territories will have 460,000 more people in the next decade, Sing Tao reports, citing the Planing Department.

Hong Kong Island will see its population shrink by 80,000.

Most of Hong Kong’s elderly residents will be in Eastern District, the Planning Department said in its Projections of Population Distribution 2015-2024 report released on Friday.

The district’s population of citizens 65 and above, estimated at 144,000, will account for 28 percent of the total, the highest on record.

Meanwhile, Yuen Long will have the highest concentration of young people, up 16 percent in 2024 from 12 percent in 2015.

Sha Tin, Kwun Tong and Yuen Long are expected to have the highest density or population in relation to area.

Sha Tin’s population will hit 720,000 by 2024 while those of Kwun Tong and Yuen Long will each top 680,000.
