Amazon.com Inc. plans to lease aircraft and establish its own freight operation as it seeks to reduce its dependence on traditional logistics partners, the Wall Street Journal reported.
The company has held discussions with air-cargo companies to lease as many as 25 planes, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter.
Talks have been held with firms such as Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings and Air Transport Services Group, it said, adding that Amazon could begin building out the service early next year.
The effort stems from a broad desire at Amazon to take greater control of its shipping and package delivery operations.
Developing its own air-cargo fleet will help Amazon avoid delays caused by carrier partners such as UPS and FedEx, apart from giving the company greater control over costs.
