China’s hoi polloi can now have a taste of the sumptuous banquets that their leaders give out to visiting foreign dignitaries.
The Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, a historic hotel complex in Beijing that houses and entertains state guests, is offering for the first time a take-home state banquet for the Lunar New Year’s Eve festivities, Sing Tao Daily reported.
Interested parties can now pre-order family reunion dinners from the Guesthouse on Alibaba’s e-commerce platform Tmall.
The Guesthouse will only provide a total of 6,000 sets of such dinners, with prices ranging from 3,480 yuan to 3,980 yuan (US$540-615) per set, on a first-come, first-served basis.
The banquet comprises dishes that are packed in sealed and frozen bags that must be reheated before consumption. Since they need to be kept frozen during transport, only orders from nearby places such as Beijing and Tianjin can be entertained.
Jin Peihua, deputy secretary of the Shanghai Food and Beverage Association, said the banquet is not cheap; other restaurants offer the same dinner set for only 1,500 to 2,000 yuan.
