US authorities are said to be preparing new sanctions on some international companies and individuals in connection with Iran’s ballistic missile program.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the sanctions will target nearly a dozen companies and individuals in Iran, Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates for their alleged role in Iran’s missile development program.
The planned actions by the Treasury Department would mark the first US sanctions imposed on Iran since the country came to a nuclear agreement with global powers in July, the report noted.
US officials have said the Treasury retains a right under the agreement to blacklist Iranian entities suspected of involvement in missile development.
But Iranian officials have said the country’s supreme leader would view such penalties as violating the nuclear accord.
Iran has test-fired two ballistic missiles since the July agreement, one in October and a second in November, according to US officials.
A United Nations panel ruled this month that the October launch violated a UN Security Council resolution that bans Iran’s development of ballistic-missile systems.
