How a SME can raise its cyberimage

Many customers do their own product research nowadays, checking out the websites of different brands or stores.

The cyberimage of a company forms an important part of how it is perceived overall.

So, keeping an attractive cyber storefront is almost basic to running a business properly.

Compared with the cost of opening an office, which usually entails at least a few thousand US dollars, the cost of building a website is only about HK$10,000 (US$1,282), and maintenance costs are very affordable.

For budget-tight small and medium-sized firms, it’s one of the most cost-effective ways to reach, communicate and engage with customers.

About one-third of companies in Hong Kong said they have plans to revamp their websites in the next six months, said a report from Hong Kong Internet Registration Corp. Ltd., a non-profit organization that administers domain name registration under .hk, the city’s top-level domain.

How can an SME build a site that stands out from the crowd?

The organization offers a few tips.

First, keep things simple.

A website should always be user-friendly and easy to navigate.

The information should be presented in a concise manner.

Second, update the website frequently.

Nothing puts surfers off more than opening a website only to find out its last update was a year ago or more.

To keep the content fresh and to give people a reason to visit frequently, a firm should regularly upload new content or give its webpages a new look.

A frequently visited site has a better chance of being ranked higher on lists generated by search engines.

Third, interaction with users is critical.

Good webpage design should include features like blogs, a question-and-answer section and a discussion forum to engage the audience.

Fourth, make good use of social media.

Always put a link to the firm’s account on Facebook or other platforms to allow users to easily share information and increase the exposure of the company.

Finally, don’t forget cybersecurity.

While it is essential for protecting a company’s own data, it will also put users’ minds at ease and relieve them of having to worry about the leaking of their personal information while visiting the site.
