Taxi crashes into van on way to airport

A seven-seater van heading to the airport went out of control on the slippery road and was involved in a collision with a taxi, Ta Kung Pao reported Sunday.

The black van was travelling in the fast lane along North Lantau Highway toward Hong Kong International Airport on Saturday morning, then slid into the slow lane abruptly as it approached Cathay City in Chek Lap Kok.

The taxi was in the slow lane and could not slow down in time. It collided with the van.

A picture taken at the time of the accident shows the two vehicles had knocked over a series of water barriers and the van had turned onto its side.

Only the taxi driver was injured, and he was taken to hospital.

The van’s driver and his companion and the taxi’s passengers had flights to catch.

After a preliminary investigation, police allowed them to take other taxis to the airport.

Three weeks ago, on Dec. 27, another taxi went out of control after one of its tires suddenly burst as it traveled to the airport.

The four passengers aboard — two married couples from Hubei — suffered minor injuries and received simple dressings for their wounds.

Police offered them a ride to the airport to catch their 8:40 a.m. flight.
