Robber relieves elderly man of HK$8,000 he exposed by accident

A robber snatched HK$8,000 (US$1,027) from an 84-year-old man who exposed the money by accident in a public toilet, Commerical Radio reported Wednesday.

But the victim’s bad luck did not end there.

The man, surnamed Yu, fell and injured himself while chasing the robber.

A passerby called police.

Yu was later sent to hospital, where he is in stable condition.

He told police he used a public toilet at the intersection of Yen Chow Street and Un Chau Street in Sham Shui Po on his way to a bank Wednesday morning, Apple Daily reported Thursday.

As he was taking out tissues from his pocket to dry his hands after washing them, the money, in HK$500 and HK$100 notes, was exposed.

A man Yu described as being of South Asian origin saw the banknotes, swiftly grabbed them and fled toward Kiu Kiang Street.

Yu said the money was part of HK$10,000 one of his friends gave him for the coming Lunar New Year.

Police are searching for the robber.
