Cold weather expected again in HK due to winter monsoon

Hong Kong is expected to suffer cold weather again in the coming days thanks to an active winter monsoon, less than two weeks after the city suffered its lowest temperatures in nearly six decades.

According to the Observatory, the air pressure in the north of South China is rising, leading to a wave of cold air drifting into Hong Kong since Sunday evening.

The city, which saw some rain over the weekend, is expected to remain cold in the next couple of days.

Temperature in downtown area will fall to around 10 degrees Celsius late Monday, and further decline to 9 degrees on Tuesday, according to the forecast.

Ta Kwu Ling in the north might see temperature as low as 6 degrees Celsius Tuesday morning.

The Center for Health Protection has reminded people that cold weather could make it easier for people to fall sick. Elders and those suffering from heart or respiratory problems should be on guard, it said.

The Social Welfare Department also issued a special reminder to elders and urged them to stay warm.

For senior citizens living alone, arrangements should be put in place to have relatives or neighbors make periodic checks, it said.
