A police officer has been sentenced to four weeks in prison for operating a motor vehicle without a valid driving license and third-party liability insurance, Apple Daily reported Monday.
Poon Kwok-kit, 26, who had his license suspended earlier for speeding, continued to drive to and from work at the Police Tactical Unit in Sham Shui Po district.
His ex-girlfriend reported him to police.
As part of Poon’s sentence, his driving license has been suspended for 12 months.
Poon’s lawyer told a Kwun Tong magistrate’s court his client served in the force for six years without any disciplinary penalties and has been commended for his performance.
The defendant has lost his job and has learnt a weighty lesson, the lawyer said, seeking a suspended sentence for his client.
But the magistrate said Poon committed an offense less than two months after his license was first suspended.
He knew the law but broke it, making his offense even serious.
In addition, Poon expressed no regret, so he deserves to be imprisoned immediately, the magistrate said.
Poon has filed an appeal and is now out on HK$50,000 (US$6,427) bail.
