A Pakistani torture claimant was arrested after a woman was robbed of HK$58,000 in cash in Tsim Sha Tsui, Headline Daily reported Thursday.
A 40-year-old woman surnamed Yan met a female friend at 2 a.m. Wednesday on Mody Road in Tsim Sha Tsui and took a stack of cash wrapped in white paper from her friend.
She was then followed by two men.
One of them, a 23-year-old Pakistani named Masih, suddenly grabbed the cash from Yan when she was on Minden Avenue, the report said.
Yan chased Masih and was joined by 10 men who were about to enter a bar on that street.
The men managed to stop Masih about 200 meters from where the robbery took place.
The suspect was held on the ground and handed to the police, Apple Daily reported.
When he was captured, he was in tears, the report said. Holding a cross pendant, he said, “I am sorry.”
Police said the suspect is an asylum seeker on the basis of a torture claim and they will investigate to see if he was involved in other cases.
