Girlfriend-caring social media star unmasked as a fraud

A Chinese man who lit up social media with news about his devotion to his girlfriend while she lay in a coma in hospital two years ago has been unmasked as a fraud and accused of domestic violence

The 24-year-old man, surnamed Liu, is the subject of an investigation by authorities in Liaoning province after it emerged that he was responsible for the woman’s condition.

Liu has disappeared and his whereabouts are not known, Beijing Youth daily reports.

The abuse was uncovered after the woman, surnamed Lin, recovered well enough to tell her family that Liu had struck her and caused her to fall down a flight of stairs.

Lin, 21, said she had been habitually abused by Liu with whom she was running a bakeshop in Dalian city.

On Sept. 29, 2014, her father received a phone call from Liu that she had been severely injured in a fall.

She fell into a coma. Doctors said she suffered serious brain trauma.

Local media reported that Liu never left her side in a show of “selfless devotion” and went into debt providing for her.

The story took social media by storm.

But Lin’s parents became suspicious after he refused to let them see her.

The investigation is a test of China’s domestic violence law which went into effect this month.
