Five households are regretting not ensuring the keys to their homes were secure, after a thief used the keys to break into their flats.
Four of the five flat-dwellers left a spare front-door key underneath the door mat, and the remaining one forgot to take the key from the door after entering the flat.
Police said they arrested a man surnamed So, 43, at the Lo Wu border control point when he was about to enter mainland China on Saturday, after having monitored him for some time, Headline Daily reports.
They took So to his home in Fu Heng Estate in Tai Po on Monday and found HK$30,000 (US$3,900) in cash, which they suspect he stole from several households in Sheung Shui.
Police said they suspect that So, who is jobless, was involved in at least five burglaries in Tin Ping Estate, getting away with a combined HK$40,000 worth of valuables and a similar amount in cash.
