HK man says he stole Rolex to keep up with high-living girl

Did he really think he could get away with it?

Regardless, a 21-year-old Hong Kong man attempted a bizarre watch shop heist in Shenzhen, hoping to cover a huge credit card debt.

Naturally, he was caught but the best part of the story is how he even got the sales clerk to cooperate, according to Apple Daily.

The suspect walked into the watch store in the upmarket TheMixC shopping mall and asked to try on a Rolex.

But wait — he got the clerk to put one on each wrist “for size” then he quickly darted off.

He was caught less than 100 meters from the store by security guards.

The watches, worth 227,500 yuan (US$34,835) and 131,600 yuan were recovered.

The suspect said he was more than HK$100,000 (US$12,900) in credit card debt and had hoped to pay it off by stealing an expensive watch and selling it to a fence.

He chose Shenzhen over Hong Kong because he did not want the publicity to embarrass his family.

Police said the man admitted charging his high-living girlfriend’s expenses to his credit card and that he had no choice but to steal to keep up with her.
