A farmer in Huian county, Fujian province, said she found three large pieces of what are thought to be gallstones, weighing a combined 50 grams, inside a chicken Wednesday.
These “chicken treasures” (雞寶) could be worth between 70,000 yuan (US$10,787) and 350,000 yuan per gram, Apple Daily reported Friday.
Some people believe “chicken treasures” are of very high medicinal value in traditional Chinese medicine, but that has never been scientifically proven.
The farmer, surnamed Huang, said she obtained the “chicken treasures” from one of the five chickens she is raising.
Huang said she has sent pictures of her find to three or four auction houses in Shanghai, and they replied that there is a 90 percent likelihood that the items are “chicken treasures”.
Huang said she was told she could bring the “chicken treasures” along to an auction in Shanghai in April.
She said the people at the auction house asked her to let the “chicken treasures” air-dry in a well-ventilated environment and away from sunlight.
Mainland website qq.com says there are suggestions that such “chicken treasures” could be gallstones or an accumulation of eggs as a result of clogging of ovary ducts due to an inflammation of the ovaries.
Many medical experts said that while there is much speculation about the value of “chicken treasures”, their medical benefits are unproven.
A doctor at Fujian Medical University said “chicken treasures” play no part in traditional Chinese medicine.
