Young muntjak trapped in Sai Kung railing rescued

Rescuers freed a young muntjak who got trapped while passing through the railing of a footbridge in Sai Kung.

The animal, also known as a barking deer, remained in serious condition after undergoing treatment for deep bruises and lacerations it sustained from its ordeal, Apple Daily reports.

Around 6 a.m. on Wednesday, the fire department received a call from a resident who saw the animal wailing in pain after getting trapped in the railing of a footbridge along Clearwater Bay Road. There was a gap of only five inches between the rails.

Responding firemen managed to pull it out of the railing after covering its head to keep it from panicking.

The animal sustained deep wounds in the body as it struggled to free itself.

Personnel from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) arrived and helped move it into a cage.

The muntjak was then taken to the SPCA office in Wan Chai before it was transferred to the Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden for treatment.

An attending veterinarian said the animal was in serious condition and needed to be closely monitored.
