Mom pleads guilty to child abuse after slapping son 25 times

A 34-year-old mother pleaded guilty to a charge of child abuse, saying she slapped her son multiple times because she lost her temper after he lied to her, Apple Daily reports.

The woman, surnamed Nie, who moved to Hong Kong with her husband in 2010 and got divorced last year, has been living with her two sons, aged 13 and 8, along with her boyfriend.

On Dec. 20 last year, a Sunday, she said her younger son told her he went to study in a library instead of going to a church as he had been told to do.

After she found out he did not go to the library either but went to watch a movie with his father and brother instead, she flew into a rage and slapped him five times on the right cheek and 20 times on the left.

She then took a knife and threatened to kill herself, only to be stopped by her domestic worker, who called Nie’s ex-husband to seek help from the police.

The boy was later sent to hospital for medical treatment before he was put under the ex-husband’s custody.

Magistrate Kelly Shui said Nie’s manner of disciplining her child could only make him afraid of going to church for the rest of his life.

The court granted her bail with a community service order. Her sentence will be announced on April 1.
