Hiker survives lightning strike in Sai Kung

A 42-year-old man was struck by lightning while hiking with a group of friends along the MacLehose Trail in Sai Kung on Sunday.

The man, surnamed Szeto, suffered a momentary blackout and loss of memory but regained consciousness after he was taken to hospital, news website hk01.com reports.

He was still suffering from a partial loss of hearing, but he counted himself lucky to have escaped what could have been a fatal incident.

Szeto, an avid hiker, was at Ngau Yi Shek, which is an open space with no trees around, when lightning struck him around 10:02 a.m. He fell to the ground and passed out.

The amber rainstorm and thunderstorm warnings were on at the time of the incident.

Paramedics who arrived at the scene found burn marks on Szeto’s chest, and his titanium necklace was damaged by the intense heat.

He also sustained injuries to his neck and feet, and was rushed to the Tseung Kwan O Hospital.

Szeto said the weather condition was not bad when he and his friends set out for the hike around 7 a.m.

He said the accident would not discourage him from pursuing his love for hiking after recovery.
