8 Shenzhen students arrested for smuggling game disks

Eight female university students from Shenzhen were arrested at the border at Lo Wu as they tried to smuggle from Hong Kong 160 disks containing the new PlayStation 4 game Dark Souls III.

Between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 pm on April 11, Shenzhen customs officers discovered the disks on the eight young women, who were dressed casually with a backpack and handbag each, People.com.cn reported Wednesday.

Each of the students carried 20 disks.

The report did not explain how the students obtained the disks a day before the official launch of the Chinese version of Dark Souls III on April 12.

After they were arrested, the students initially claimed that they had the disks for self-use, but they eventually admitted that they were taking part in a smuggling operation organized by another student, who would reward them for doing so.

Some of the students said they had successfully smuggled other goods previously and had invited some friends to do it with them this time, the report said.

Shenzhen customs warned that people should not try to smuggle goods into the mainland, since, instead of making a small amount of money, they will end up being severely punished.

Dark Souls is a role-playing action video game developed by FromSoftware and published by Namco Bandai Games. The third edition of the game is priced at HK$458 (US$59).
